UNI CEI 11170-1 Railway and tramway vehicles Guidelines for fire protection of railway, tramway and guided path vehicles General principles

1.PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF APPLICATION

This Part of the Standard defines the measures to be adopted on railway, tramway and guided path vehicles in order to limit the risk of fire and to protect passengers and vehicle crew
effectively.

Safety measures specified in this Standard apply to all brand-new vehicles, including already operating vehicles that are submitted to total renewal.

Fire protection measures, purpose of this Standard, concern:
– fire behavior of materials and components making up vehicle fittings and electrical parts;
– fire resisting properties of “fire barriers” and “fire-retardant components”;
– design criteria;
– safety measures for electric and electronic systems;
– fire extinguishing, control and signaling systems (e.g.: emergency brake, fire extinguishing
systems, detection systems, ventilation system, etc.).

Fire protection measures are defined in UNI CEI 11170-2 and UNI CEI 11170-3 Standards respectively, on the base of the commonest fire causes that may occur on guided path
vehicles.

For standard spare parts, replacements or partial vehicle renewal (e.g.: special and routine maintenance and overhauls at workshop), observe UNI CEI 11170-3 prescriptions only.

This part of the Standard does not apply to operating vehicles, to vehicles at supply stage or to vehicles being the purpose of a contract at a date preceding the date of issue of the present
Standard, unless otherwise agreed upon between the Transportation Company and supplier.

As concerns subway rolling stocks, this Standard is only applicable in compliance with current regulation in force 1)
